Paula:
It's friday night. I did make sure to get some exercise today. I took the stairs at work and had my veggies too. YAY! I have to start running again. When Larissa and I discussed running the 5K last month, I started to train, but the past couple of weeks have been difficult. I've been suffering from back pain, but it's slowly going away (thank god for medication...smile). I'm looking forward to training again!

Larissa:
I went out for a 6k (fast) walk with the dog, trying to talk myself into believing that tomorrow when I go running I'm not going to throw up on myself, the dog, passing children, etc. I also remain unconvinced that chocolate is not an essential training food. Dark chocolate - good for the heart. Exercise - good for the heart. You see where I'm going with this? Anyway, I'm sure this will all be worth it, although I'm starting to worry we're going to be running this race in the snow!

Introduction

Welcome to our blog. The following conversation is between the two of us who are running our first ever 5K to support our health and Volunteer Ottawa. Larissa is the Executive Director of Volunteer Ottawa, and Paula is the Financial and Events Manager.

Larissa: "Okay, Paula, here we go. I can't believe we're doing this. This is your first 5K, right?"

Paula: "Yup, this is my first. Before you and I talked about running the 5K, I hadn't run more than about 5 steps in 20 years."

"That's still more recently than me. I always reluctantly shuffled along, even during dodge ball. I was the easiest target ever. I guess we should talk about why we're doing this and how we hope people will cheer us along. Why are we doing this again?"

"Not only are we doing this to raise funds for Volunteer Ottawa, but we're also using this as an opportunity to get healthier, not to mention losing weight in the process."

"I've lost a lot of weight this year, and I know you have too. Are you having trouble staying motivated? I know not only do you work, but you have two boys and volunteer as well. I find it hard to stay focused on myself, and I don't have to juggle children...although sometimes my husband counts as one."

"As with you, I've lost a fair bit of weight this year (actually, 50 pounds so far!), but I have definitely reached a plateau and can't seem to lose any more weight. As you said I have two boys that I'm raising at home so it does make it difficult to find the time to work out. But you also have challenges, like schooling takes a lot of your time. I don't know how you do it."

"Yeah, going back to school while working full-time made a lot of sense before I actually did it. But I think we are both in similar places: we work hard because we know Volunteer Ottawa has such a huge impact in the community, and we have a lot of stuff going on in our home lives too. Neither of us can spend the money on a trainer or other form of outsider motivation, so we have to do it ourselves! I'm excited about this, but I also have visions of passing out mid-way through the race and having to be carried off in shame."

"Hopefully people out there will follow us through our journey and keep us focused and on track. All donations made through the Canada Helps link on this blog will go directly to Volunteer Ottawa's community services and will also keep us motivated. We can't let anyone down!"

"Yes, and all donations through Canada Helps are tax receipt-able, as are direct donations to Volunteer Ottawa as we are a registered Canadian charity. Thank you to everyone for reading this, and thank you in advance for your support! Paula and I will be updating this blog daily - yes, Paula, daily - and will report on every workout made, missed, or otherwise! And, of course, when I actually manage to run instead of shuffling. I still cannot believe we are doing this!"
